23 Benjamin Franklin Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists
Benjamin Franklin High School is proud to announce the following twenty-three (23) seniors have been selected as Semifinalists and twelve (12) were named National Merit Commended Scholars in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program announced by the officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). All Finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2017.

The administration, faculty, staff and student body of Benjamin Franklin High School will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the reopening of the school following Hurricane Katrina on Friday, January 15, 2016. Events will be held throughout the afternoon, from noon until 3:25 P.M.
The first public high school to reopen in Orleans Parish following Hurricane Katrina, Ben Franklin opened its door on January 17, 2006. It was Ben Franklin’s 300th birthday. On this day they opened as a public charter school. Benjamin Franklin High School’s governing board, Advocates for Academic Excellence in Education, Inc. (AAEE), is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Patrick Widhalm as the next Head of School. The national search for Head of School was conducted with the assistance of Educational Directions, Inc.
Dr. Widhalm has served as the Executive Director of the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts in Natchitoches, Louisiana, since 2001. LSMSA is a residential high school that has been recognized as one of the top schools in Louisiana and in the nation. Prior appointments include the Conservatory of Music at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, and founding Dean of Arts and Academics at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Arts and Humanities in Greenville. Benjamin Franklin High School will host an Open House for prospective students and parents at the school’s campus. The Open House will include a tour of the school and information about Franklin’s curricula, programs, activities and mission. Robinson The U.S. Green Building Council Louisiana Chapter invites interested students, parents and other residents to see a model of a green school here in New Orleans. On Saturday, Oct. 25, Ben Franklin High School will be featured as the USGBC Louisiana’s Green Schools Showcase, starting with a tour of the building and a reception to celebrate the designation.
This event, to be held from 11am-1pm at 2001 Leon C. Simon Drive in New Orleans, is the last local event of Greenbuild week, and the last stop on the Green Makes Cents tour – one of the final tours offered as part of the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo 2014, to be held at Morial Convention Center from Oct. 22-24. The conference - the flagship event of the USGBC, which operates the LEED certification program – is expected to bring up to 25,000 green building professionals to the city that week. WHEN: Thursday, October 9 5:30-8:00 pm Ben Franklin cheerleaders recently attended the Universal Cheerleaders Association Summer Camp where they took home the gold ribbon in Superior Standing in the Home and gold ribbon in Superior Standing Overall.
Other individual awards were as follows: Do you know a student who might benefit from taking AP Calculus BC but doesn't have the course offered at their school? Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus BC is a full-year, university-level course. It covers more than the "AB" version and may be appropriate for very capable math students. Many schools are not able to offer "BC" due to limited demand. Now students can take a class they need online with a state-approved course provider and have the credit applied to their transcript. These courses are offered through the Louisiana Supplemental Course Academy, SCA (formerly "Course Choice").
Benjamin Franklin High School held its 2013 – 2014 commencement ceremony, Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Kiefer UNO Lakefront Arena. Franklin awarded diplomas to 178 students. Mr. Nolan Marshall, Jr., President of the Orleans Parish School Board, was the commencement speaker.
During the ceremony the Franklin Alumni Association presented the Key Award to Addison Howenstine. The Key Award is given to the senior who best exemplifies the spirit and broad-based excellence of Mr. Benjamin Franklin. The Valedictorian was Jessica Garda who will be attending Duke University and the Salutatorian was Luke Tang who will be attending Harvard College. |
